ALHAMBRA
Towering above the Spanish city of Granada, the red brick walls of the Alhambra fortress hide exotic gardens, textiles, mosaics, embroidery, and metalwork. Built in the 13th and 14th centuries by the Moors, the palace was captured by Spain in 1492. After centuries of neglect, this notable example of Moorish architecture was declared a national monument in 1870.

Palace of Charles V (Palacio de Carlos V). A pupil of Michelangelo's designed it in 1526. The emperor had it built using tax funds of the Moors, but when they rebelled in 1568, the building was stopped - and never finished, up until today. |

Palace of the Moors (Patio de los Arrayanes). |
