London’s famous clock tower, has looked over the city since the mid-19th century. The tower is part of the Houses of Parliament (also known as the Palace of Westminster) and takes its name from the giant 13.5-ton bell that tolls the hours. The original medieval palace on the site, for centuries the chief London residence of the sovereign, was largely destroyed by fire in 1834. The current building was completed in 1852.
