Day 9: Manitoulin Island

Sunday 6th July 1997: At the Gordon's Lodge's restaurant we had a good breakfast: french toast and maple syrup, and bacon. Then we just toured around the island. It's about 130 kilometres long and 50 kilometers wide at the most. Part of the island is the biggest piece of non-abandoned Indian land: the Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reserve. Other villages on the island are Kagawong, Manitowaning, Mindemoya, Sheguiandah, Sheshegwanning and Tehkumma. We visited the Bridal Veil Falls (picture below) in Kagawong. We were able to walk behind them.

From Ten Mile Point we enjoyed the scenery of the Georgian Bay and then we drove into the Wikwemikong reserve. The people there still really are from the Indian race, if I may say so - dark with long black hair. On our way back to the lodge we had lunch in Little Current: a roast beef sandwich and hot chocolate. When the sun started to warm us up we did some pedal boating in the Gore Bay near the cottage.

Can you see Gordon's Lodge on the shore?

We had dinner in the same restaurant as where we had breakfast: smoked salmon with ice cream for dessert. After dinner we drove through the town of Gore Bay and simply enjoyed the view.

Travelled distance: about 260 kms.

Weather: Rain at first, less than 20ºC; Sunny later, over 20ºC.
