Eurovision Song Contest 2005

On Thursday 19th and Saturday 21st May 2005 the 50th Eurovision Song Contest was held at the Palats Sportu in Kiev (Ukraine), hosted by Maria Efrosnina (Masha) and Pavlo Shylko (DJ Pasha).

The format of the contest is a preliminary qualifying round and the grand final. 14 participants have directly qualified for the grand final. They are the host nation (and 2004 contest winner) Ukraine, the 4 main European Broadcasting Union members United Kingdom, Germany, France and Spain, along with the 9 highest ranked countries of the 2004 contest results: Serbia & Montenegro, Greece, Turkey, Sweden, Cyprus, Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Russia and Malta. The remainder 10 participants are in the qualifying round.

QUALIFYING ROUND (Thursday 19 May 2005).

The 25 participants in this qualifying round are:
- participants returning from exclusion Estonia, Israel, Denmark, Finland, Portugal, Lithuania, Latvia, Andorra, Slovenia, Belarus, Monaco and Switzerland
- lowest-ranked countries from the 2004 ESC results Macedonia, Croatia, Poland, Romania, Iceland, Netherlands, Austria, Ireland, Belgium and Norway
- debut countries Bulgaria, Hungary and Moldova.

The points score of the top 10 participants remain undisclosed until after the grand final. The participants proceding to the grand final are marked in red.

GRAND FINAL (Saturday 21 May 2005).

By means of televoting 12 points will be allocated to the song gaining the most votes, 10 points to the song gaining the second highest number of votes, 8 points to the song gaining the third highest number of votes, 7 points to the next, and so on until 1 point to the song gaining the tenth highest number of votes. Each country also has a stand-by jury in place. The national jury's outcome will be applied if the telecommunications penetration rate is less than 80%. Also in case of any tie for any of the first ten positions, the order of the tying songs shall be ascertained by a show of hands by the jury members. If there is still a tie after show of hands, the final vote shall be decided by the vote of the youngest member of the jury.
