Eurovision Song Contest 2008

On Tuesday 20th, Thursday 22nd and Saturday 24th May 2008 the 53rd Eurovision Song Contest will be held at the Belgrade Arena in Belgrade (Serbia), hosted by Jovana Janković and Željko Joksimović.

The format of the contest is 2 semi-finals and then the grand final. From the total of 43 participating nations, 5 have directly qualified for the grand final. They are the 4 main European Broadcasting Union members United Kingdom, Germany, France and Spain, along with the 2007 winner and host nation Serbia. There will be 20 more grand finalists; 10 from each semi-final, which brings the total of grand finalists to 25.
The 4 main EBU members will also vote in the semifinals; Germany and Spain in semi-final 1; United Kingdom and France in semi-final 2. Serbia too will vote in semi-final 2. This was all decided by draw on 28 January 2008.
The draw to determine the split of the 38 semi-finalists took place on 28 February 2008, and the running order on 17 March 2008.
Citizens of each participating country vote by telephone and SMS. Each voting nation's 10 favourites are awarded 1 to 8, 10 and 12 points based on the number of votes. The top 9 of the semi-finals tele-voting qualify for the grand final. The highest ranked entry of the back-up jury that has not qualified in the tele-voting also qualifies for the grand final. The 10 qualified nations will be presented in random order at the end of both semi-final broadcasts.

GRAND FINAL (Saturday 24 May 2008).

People in each country can vote by tele-vote or SMS. voting nation's 10 favourites are awarded 1 to 8, 10 and 12 points based on the number of votes. All 43 participantss have the right to cast points in the final. Each nation also has a stand-by jury in place. The national jury's outcome will be applied if the telecommunications penetration rate is less than 80%. Also in case of any tie for any of the first ten positions, the order of the tying songs shall be ascertained by a show of hands by the jury members. If there is still a tie after show of hands, the final vote shall be decided by the vote of the youngest member of the jury.
