Weekend trip to York by car and ferry

Friday 6th December: With Ingrid's parents we drove to Rotterdam harbour where we embarked on the Rotterdam-Hull ferry. We sailed through the night.

Weather: Cloudy, 5ºC.

Saturday 7th December: Early in the morning we hopped onto a bus that drove us to the city of York. We did a lot of shopping.

But we also saw some sights, including:

Minster of York. The pinnacled towers of the 700-year-old York Minster rise above the city. The country’s largest Gothic cathedral, it stretches 163 metres (534 feet) from end to end and features a central tower 56 metres (184 feet) high. The church houses many historical treasures, including stained-glass windows that rival the magnificent glass of French cathedrals, and objects made of ivory, silver, sandalwood, and gold.

The world famous Jorvik Viking Centre uses highly detailed models to recreate life in Viking York. Riding a 'Time Car' beneath the city streets you will travel through a complete Viking village whose reconstructed buildings are located where they actually stood 1000 years ago.

Clifford's Tower. The Tower dates back to the 13th century, when it was re-built in stone by Henry III, as part of the York Castle defences. Apparently, it was first built in wood but was burned down during one of many uprisings by the local population. It is believed to be named after Roger Clifford, a Lancastrian, who was hung there, in chains, after the Battle of Bourobridge in 1332. However, this statement cannot be confirmed, so, take it with a pinch of salt, as there's conflicting stories, for example, The name Clifford's Tower was first recorded in 1596; before then it was called the great tower.

At the end of the day, the bus drove us back to the Hull terminal, where the ferry left for Rotterdam. We had a great meal on board and again travelled overnight.

Weather: Cold and cloudy, 0ºC.

Sunday 8th December: We arrived early in the morning in Rotterdam harbour and then drove back home, to Urmond.

Weather: Cold and foggy/cloudy, 0ºC.
